Reko Rennie.
He’s bold, knows where he comes from and he’s not afraid to show it. Reko is renowned for expressing his First Nations identity through contemporary media. A largely autobiographical artist, he weaves references to his Kamilaroi heritage* and graffiti into his works. I love that he is painting indigenous works, but not indigenous works that we traditionally identify as indigenous. It’s breaking cultural stereotypes and societal expectations of indigenous artistic expression and artistic form.
* The Kamilaroi Nation extends from northern NSW to southern Queensland.
Kerser.
I’m always searching for new hip hop and rap internationally and here in Australia. It was awesome to find this guy who is actually from Sydney (Campbelltown). This type of music just didn’t exist when I moved here 15 years ago. So, I guess my search was about finding reasons to stay. I still listen to my London rap, hip hop, and artists from the US (Wutang Clan, Run DMC, Public Enemy). Kerser had to fight for his art, as media refused to promote him in the early days. But he persisted to his credit. He’s just released Roll The Dice and performed in Perth (June 11). Keep an eye out.
Mr Sabotage.
It is so hard, almost impossible, to get hold of his sneakers these days. I do, however, have a few pairs… If you’re a sneaker fan, then this guy’s art- and design-led pimping of established brands (Nike, New Balance, Adidas, La Coste, Vans) is a must. He’s a native to Singapore (real name Mark Ong) and has been customising his sneakers since a kid. It’s become big business for him now, and the brands are courting him to put his mark on their wares. He has an online shop. See all his links from his Instagram link above.
DJ Dave.
I listen to this guy every dayDave @santandave - David Orobosa Omoregie (born 5 June 1998), known professionally as Dave or Santan Dave, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor.[1][2][3] Dave has gained acclaim for his socially conscious lyricism and wordplay, and is among the most recognised British rappers.[4]
Dave's debut album Psychodrama (2019) was met with widespread critical acclaim and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, having the biggest first week streams for a UK rap album. It went on to win the Mercury Prize, and Album of the Year at the 2020 Brit Awards. He made his acting debut in the third season of the Netflix series Top Boy, which was released in September 2019.

Astounding imagery and concept… prepare to be utterly blown away by this guy’s work.
“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with ”
Right now.
“Quote on someone who has done something amazing, or is an icon of the scene who is relevant re timing, etc.”
Focus.
Daniel Formentin and James McKenna have just launched a collective with more than 10 of the top artists in Perth – Golden Panther Tattoo. We get up close.
Define Golden Panther.
A progressive space for like-minded artists looking to learn, grow and develop. The studio is run by artists, for artists.
Styles you specialise in.
We are lucky enough to have a broadly skilled group of artists, catering to all styles. Aaron: sacred geometry; Alison: decorative and floral design; Akos: Japanese motifs: Blair: American traditional; Daniel: blackwork and Japanese motifs; James: he’s recognised internationally as a pioneer in reimagined traditional; Erik: realism; Kaitlin: neo-traditional and art nouveau; Tanya: stylised realism; Zayne: Japanese motifs.
Current trends.
Neo-tribal and fine-line designs. Neo-tribal is a fusion of sacred design and traditional tribal elements. Fine-line designs are minimalist and refined, requiring the steadiest of hands. It’s a specialised skill.
Merchandise.
Stay tuned for our Flash Day release at the end of June. Sign up to our instagram to keep up to date on the event. Pictured: LS Tee by Golden Panther resident artist Aaron Jamieson @aaron.j.tattoos.
Enduring styles.
The styles that stand the test of time, all have common traits. These include balance, flow, contrast and a strong influence from art history. It transcends style. Pictured: Isobel Valey, known as the most tattooed woman in the world (93%). Image credit: Bored Panda.
Next tattoo trend.
Tattoo trends, like all other things, are cyclical. Best to not be worried about if your tattoo is ‘trendy’. Get your tattoo for you, not other people. However, in saying that, we do see that custom designs are becoming more sought-after (fortunately for us, it’s our thing). Collaborations between artists are also becoming more common (see Blair and James’ collaboration above).
Icon of the scene.
Filip Leu. He’s a boss. Everyone who tattoos knows him and his body of work. If he were a singer, he’d be Prince. He took the Japanese artform to a new level by reinterpreting it in his own way. He’s still practicing. Respect.
Who to watch.
Dansin, Luxembourg Electric. This guy is the tattooist’s tattooer. He freehands everything onto the body, so his knowledge of the content is second-to-none. His style is super recognisable, and absolutely flawless.
Thinking.
Forward. Working in an industry that is notoriously ‘old school’ and male dominated, we are consciously doing what we can to push our industry away from the stereotype.
Watching.
Daniel: horror and sci-fi – think Mandy, Alien, Robocop (1987); James: 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, Bake off, 90’s movies. Above: Edward Norton in Primal Fear (another favourite). (Sourc.: Let’s stop there guys, it’s getting freaky.)
Listening.
2000s electronic and easy listening (60s and 70s rock, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers). I also like a bit of drum and base (don’t judge me). Pictured: lead singer of Prodigy (RIP).
Reading.
The Hobbit (again). I am a sucker for this and just keep reading it. James is reading The Art of War.
Supporting.
Local. Local business, local artists, local products. Short Order Burgers, the Cali Chamber, Bosun’s Barber, 1991 Skate Shop.
Procrastinating over.
Emails.
Passionate about.
Our industry becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Alternatives to plastics have been developed, so we are eradicating it from our daily use (we use it a lot). So this is great for our industry.
If I were PM.
Increased action to combat climate change, push sustainability, conservation and legalise marijuana.
